I am a proud nerd and a proud Black woman so naturally, I am a proud Blerd! I love everything centered in Pop-Culture and its reflection of social issues/relationships. I thrive on reading about new ideas and perspectives; while always enjoying a trip to the comic book store.
My Blerd role model would have to be my Mom. Corny, but she really is an inspiration to me. If I had to pick someone else I'd say Ralp Ellison for writing Invisible Man. He encapsulated my early childhood feeling of not truly being seen. First time I didn't feel alone.
I use social media. I am fortunate to know a couple of fellow Blerds and have them in my life, but it is always nice to find more! =]
How can I just pick one!? Perhaps it is whenever a person says to me "You're not like other black people" and then I ask them to define "other black people..."
"Be extraordinary, not ordinary"--via My Mom.
I am a passionate about producing media that speaks to more than just certain demographics. Whether it is digital media or writing.
I read everything. I believe it is important to give yourself a healthy dose of "what I don't want to hear" in order to keep your mind fresh. I constantly listen to "Fresh Air" on NPR, love the bloggers I follow and I'm currently reading, "All Aunt Hagar's Children."
Don't feel like you're an oddity or alone because you're Black and nerdy. Every nerd feels like that at some point. Every Blerd definitely feels that way. You're not alone, but you are FABULOUS!
Hmmm...tough choice between Storm from the X-Men and the Incredible Hulk!
I played Justice League with my Barbies.
