Nikki – 27 – Vocalist/Church Musician – Chattanooga, TN

Bio

Nikki Ellis is a pretty high energy person who has the nerve to be a serious coffee drinker as well. She is equal parts introvert and extrovert which is every bit as confusing as it sounds. Chattanooga, TN is where her life happens from day to day. In college she studied vocal performance and accidentally found the most interesting section of her course work to be the study of diction and phonetics.

In her current job as assistant music director of her church she has learned that the chaos that comes along with her work really resonates with her personality. She has been in local bands on an off for the past four years and can be found performing in many different capacities around town. Intuition is her superpower.

  • I am BlerdNation because...

I willingly walk into those awkward moments that nerdom leads me to and I’ll take anyone I can there too. I rather enjoy (read: cannot help) exposing my analytical nature in unusual ways. Most times I am as interested in what a person is saying to me as I am in how they say it. The way we form our words, the words we choose, the way we use our voices all save me from the potential of ever having mundane encounters.

  • Who is your blerd role model? Why?

At this moment my best Blerd role model is Esperanza Spaulding. In a world where singers are packaged and their voices affected to produce “marketable” products, she is making beautiful music and bringing it to the people. I listen to her and feel as though I hear her saying, “Yes, high notes. Remember those?!” I find this to be a most admirable quality.

  • How do you stay connected to other blerds?

I appreciate the offerings of Blerdocity on twitter; such clever, bite sized nuggets of goodness to get me through the day. I am an avid blog reader so I am stalking as many Blerdy blogs as I can. Also, the reading on the Blerdometer in my family is pretty high, as a result any gathering we have is a Blerd event.

  • What’s your most awkward blerd moment?

Anytime someone tries to talk to me about sports is an intensely awkward moment in both my life and theirs. You have been warned. I'll sing to and about anything I please -it is weird

  • What’s your favorite word/phrase?

What kind of question is that? I love to explore language too much to choose a favorite!

  • What are your goals/passions?

Performing is my passion. It’s what I have the most experience in and what I work to become better at everyday.

  • What are you listening to, watching, or reading that impacts you or that is giving you a different perspective?

  • Are there any famous, or not-so-famous, people that you think would be a great addition to BlerdNation?

Nikki Walton of CurlyNikki.com, Issa Rae of the Misadventures of an Awkward Black girl

  • What advice would you give to other blerds?

Do things that scare you. Seek adventure, take someone with you.
